Alberta long-weekend ticket blitz nets 2,500 speeders

EDMONTON – Alberta sheriffs doled out almost 2,500 speeding tickets over the Easter long weekend.

Between Thursday and Monday, 2,426 speeding tickets were issued on Alberta highways during a long-weekend crackdown.

Officials also caught 83 seatbelt infractions, 19 child restraint infractions, and 196 other hazardous violations. There were also nine drunk drivers caught in the traffic sweep.

All told, the holiday weekend saw 2,950 charges laid against Alberta drivers.

Here’s the breakdown of the the charges:

“¢ 2,426 speeding violations;

“¢ 83 seatbelt infractions;

“¢ 19 child restraint infractions;

“¢ 51 Gaming and Liquor Act violations;

“¢ 29 failing to stop at a stop sign infractions;

“¢ 196 other hazardous violations (e.g. careless driving, stunting); and

“¢ 146 non-hazardous violations (e.g. no insurance, suspended drivers).

Officers also charged nine impaired drivers and issued eleven 24-hour suspensions.
