SASKATOON – The shape of Saskatoon’s skyline may be changing.

North Prairie Development is planning to build what may be the tallest building in Saskatchewan.

At over 27 storeys, City Centre Tower, a condo-hotel complex, will rise almost 90 metres at the corner of 22nd Street and 3rd Avenue.

Along with a hotel and around 200 condo units, the complex will include underground parking along with an attached parkade, fitness centre, meeting centre and an on-site restaurant.

The tower will also be connected to Discover Plaza, home to BHP Billiton.

John Williams, president of North Prairie Developments says he is excited about the downtown project.

“We expect this project to be on par or to exceed that of some of the downtown high-rise projects located in larger cities like Calgary or Vancouver,” said Williams.

“The downtown area is truly becoming an exciting and vibrant area, and we’re excited to be part of our city’s and province’s tremendous growth.”

Williams said they are currently in discussions with a number of hotel operators and once completed, the name of the hotel will be announced and drawings of the building released to the public.

Affinity Credit Union currently occupies the land where the proposed tower will go.

Williams said once the credit union relocates to new corporate offices, work will begin to develop the site.

The company expects to apply for building permits in February of 2014 and Williams said council approval is not needed for the project to proceed.

Construction of the $80-$100 million tower is slated to start in March 2014 with occupancy in mid-2016.

Currently, the tallest building in the province is the 20 storey Mosaic Potash Tower in Regina at 84.5 metres.

Saskatoon’s tallest building is La Renaissance Apartments on Spadina Crescent East at 79.2 metres.

In 2011, Victory Majors Investments announced plans to construct a 27 storey, 95 metre condo at River Landing. Construction has yet to start on the River Landing project.
