Police have identified the five victims killed in a collision along Highway 401 near Trenton, Ont., on Saturday.
According to a statement issued by the Ontario Provincial Police, officers from the Quinte West Detachment received a call for a collision on Highway 401 westbound, between Aikens Road and St. Hilaire Road at around 3:45 a.m. Saturday.
Investigators said a tractor-trailer and a van were involved in the collision.
Originally, the OPP said there were ‘multiple fatalities’ but couldn’t confirm how many people were killed in the crash at the time.
In an updated statement released Saturday afternoon, the OPP confirmed that there were a total of five fatalities.
Two people were also transported to hospital with serious injuries, the statement read.
Police said the driver — and lone occupant — of the tractor trailer was not injured in the collision.
On Sunday, police identified the victims as Harpreet Singh, 24, Jaspinder Singh, 21, Karanpal Singh, 22, Mohit Chouhan, 23 and Pawan Kumar, 23.
According to police, the deceased were all from India and were studying in Montreal and the Greater Toronto Area.
They were all pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for approximately 10 hours between Wallbridge Loyalist Road and Glen Miller Road for the investigation.
The roads have now reopened.
According to police, the investigation is “continuing at this time,” and no charges have been laid.
