Hostage-taking accused remanded

Court – A 30-day psychiatric assessment has been ordered for a man charged with holding a Calgary school secretary at knife-point last week.

A provincial court judge made the order on Wednesday for Matthew Akani Adeniran, 25, six days after the incident at A.E. Cross Junior High School.

Adeniran is charged with forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, criminal harassment and possession of a weapon in connection with last Thursday’s hostage-taking.

He will be back in court with lawyer Rebecca Snukal on April 9.

No one was injured in the incident, which lasted more than two hours.

It started just before 2 p.m. in the school office, as students filled the main gym for a pep rally featuring Olympic curling silver medallist Carolyn Darbyshire.
