REGINA – Health officials in Saskatchewan say one person has been hospitalized with West Nile neurological syndrome and six others are under investigation for West Nile virus infections.
There is no information yet on the age or gender of the person who has been hospitalized.
The province says in a news release that the people likely became infected during the last weeks of August and early September.
Most people who become infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms or mild illness such as fever, headaches and body aches.
But there is a small risk of the more serious West Nile neurological syndrome, which includes encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain.
Health officials in Alberta have reported ten cases of West Nile virus, the most serious involving a man in his 30’s who has developed West Nile neurological syndrome.
