Warning signs for Unexploded Ordnances

VERNON — Several signs warn of Unexploded Ordnances (UXO’s) in Vernon. Back in 2009, DND was told Vernon was a high priority location for UXO’s but this is the first time signs have been erected on private property. Landowners are said to have a choice.

So far the federal government has spent $70-million across country cleaning up old military ordinances. Recently, a military operation removed an Unexploded Ordnance from Kalamalka Lake. It was discovered by a swimmer.

Some reports say 35 people have died from unexploded military ammunition in Canada since WWII. In 1963, two Vernon boys died while trying to pry open an old shell. The ordnance exploded.

The ammunition is said to be partially or completely buried and may look like an old, rusty pop can.

The public is warned not to touch suspicious items and instead call the 1-800 number published on the signs.
