Victim identified in fatal shooting in Terrace, B.C., well known to police

A man has been arrested after a fatal shooting in Terrace, B.C. Saturday afternoon.

Mounties were called to the Thornhill area at around 1 p.m. where they found one man dead and a woman injured.

The victim has now been identified as 27-year-old Eric Maurice Cardinal. He was the subject of a police plea for help earlier this year, and was wanted on assault and theft charges. Police asked for help finding him, but issued a warning that Cardinal was to be considered armed and dangerous.

Police said both victims had gunshot wounds.

The woman, 29, was taken to hospital and is in serious, but non-life-threatening condition. She is now in stable condition.

The man arrested, 29-year-old Travis Leslie Stephens, was known to the victims and all individuals are known to police. Mounties found Stephens hiding down an embankment after fleeing the scene.

Stephens remains in police custody and has been charged with one count of murder and one count of attempt murder. He is scheduled to appear in Supreme Court on Wednesday September 18 in Prince George.
