One person dies in Highway 63 crash

Edmonton – One person is dead after a collision on Highway 63.

The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, approximately 45 kilometers north of the community of Boyle.

RCMP say a car heading north crossed into the on-coming lane and collided with a semi trailer, causing the tractor trailer unit to catch fire.

The driver of the semi managed to escape the collision and fire unharmed.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead on scene.

RCMP say the identity of the victim has yet to be determined.

An RCMP collision analyst was on scene Thursday morning. The cause of the crash hasn’t been determined but alcohol isn’t believed to have been a factor.

Traffic was detoured for several hours at the Highway 63 & Highway 55 Junction and at the Highway 63 & Alpac Bypass Road intersection.

Highway 63 was reopened at around 8 a.m.
