NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) announced the first group of recruited family medicine trainees in North Battleford on Wednesday.

Four medical residents are the first to receive postgraduate training in the city.

Last month, the new physicians began two years of postgraduate education in the newest provincial expansion for the College of Medicine’s Family Medicine Residency Training Program.

“Our borders, and our interests, extend to the entire province of Saskatchewan. This is why the expansion of our family medicine training program to North Battleford and the arrival of these four new residents are so significant. It speaks to the college’s commitment to the people of this province,” said Lou Qualtiere, Acting Dean of Medicine.

In addition to North Battleford, medical residents can also complete training in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Swift Current and La Ronge.

Programs like this one provide new doctors with a well-rounded education in diverse communities and it’s hoped relationships will be formed that lead some to fulfilling careers outside major urban centres.

“We know that doctors who work in rural communities during their training are much more likely to set up practice in smaller communities,” said Battlefords MLA Herb Cox.

There are over 430 U of S medical residents in the province.
