WINNIPEG – Manitoba employees of Superstore and Extra Foods voted 98.3 per cent in favour of a strike on Sunday, their union says.

The vote gives the union a mandate to strike if negotiations with store owner Westfair Foods reach an impasse. They would have to give 72 hours notice of a strike before being legally allowed to walk off the job.

Talks between United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, which represents more than 3,000 Manitoba Westfair workers, and Westfair broke off at noon on Friday and are set to resume on Sept. 21. Westfair is the regional division of Loblaw.

Union members turned down the company’s most recent contract offer.

The current contract expires on Sept. 27.
