The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre says it responded to the call of a crash near Killam Bay east of Powell River around 2 p.m. Monday.

A Cormorant helicopter was dispatched as was a Coast Guard vessel.

RCMP said witnesses in the area were first on the scene and while some of the debris was located, the pilot was not.

The Transportation Safety Board says the pilot, who was the lone occupant on the Kaman KMax helicopter, was conducting heli-logging operations when the chopper crashed into the inlet.

Transport Canada is working to recover the chopper from water that’s believed to be more than 150 metres deep.

There is no word yet on what caused the crash. RCMP say several agencies, including the Coast Guard, Transport Canada, WorkSafe BC and the BC Coroner’s Service, are part of the investigation.
