Calgary election 2021: Who won in Ward 8?

Courtney Walcott is projected to become the new councillor for Ward 8.

Walcott replaces Evan Woolley, who did not run for re-election after representing the inner city ward since 2013.

There were nine candidates running for Woolley’s seat in the 2021 election.

Here’s a look at each of the candidates, in alphabetical order.

Monique Auffrey

Auffrey’s goals in winning a seat on council include running a zero-balance budget, and helping Calgary be a “socially and financially vibrant city.”

Auffrey has been the CEO of a number of social organizations, including Discovery House in Calgary, which was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Charities and one of the country’s top women’s shelters during her tenure. She is also a published author and international speaker.

Paul Bergmann

Bergmann is a lifelong Calgarian, father, entrepreneur and volunteer who graduated from the city’s Western Canada High School.

Bergmann has been a supporter of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and BILD Calgary, and in the last year has gotten more involved with some of the larger, contentious developments in the city, including the Guidebook for Great Communities and Richmond Park.

Gary Bobrovitz

A former longtime city hall reporter with Global News Calgary, Bobrovitz is well-versed on the happenings of city council, and plans to bring his experience of asking hard questions as a journalist, to continue asking those questions in council chambers.

If elected, Bobrovitz would work toward spending taxpayers’ money more carefully, supporting local businesses and investing in public transit, energy-efficient homes and increasing the city’s tree canopy, in an attempt to slow the impacts of climate change.

Yogi Henderson

Henderson is an engineer with experience working in the oil and gas, and construction industries.

If elected mayor, Henderson said he would bring his civil engineer experience to city hall, allowing him to make good decisions about things like city services and the operating budget, while working to communicate with constituents.

Madina Kanayeva

Kanayeva is running for councillor in Ward 8. No campaign information was available at the time of publishing.

Philip Mitchell

Mitchell comes from a farming background and has been self-employed for nearly 20 years, including fashion, home renovation and importation of liquor.

If elected, Mitchell said he would put an end to what he calls careless spending by the city’s government, and encourage diversification of the economy through supporting local entrepreneurs, and using tax incentives to attract new businesses.

Courtney Walcott

Walcott is a teacher and basketball coach at Western Canada High School, and was behind a petition to the Calgary Board of Education to establish an anti-racism task force. He also helped a coalition of 15 community organizations secure additional community funding from the city for vulnerable residents.

Walcott’s goals for Calgary, if elected, include safety and accessibility, enhancing the city’s transit and transportation infrastructure, and diversifying the economy.

Cornelia Wiebe

Wiebe has been a small business owner in Calgary for more than 20 years, and hopes to bring her decision-making, risk management and economic expertise to city hall.

If elected, Wiebe said she will prioritize economic recovery, environmental action, and making city development plans an inclusive process for developers and residents.

Natalie Winkler

Winkler, a lawyer, has lived in Ward 8 with her family for nearly 20 years, and said she’s heard from residents all around her over the years, motivating her to run for council.

If elected, Winkler would work to limit tax hikes and focus on responsible spending of taxpayers’ money, development of the inner city, and collaboration and cooperation among city councillors.

In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
