TORONTO – A Toronto Police officer is basking in unintentional Internet fame, after his tweet promoting a kind back to school message went viral.

As students headed back to the classroom Tuesday morning Sergeant Chris Boddy tweeted, “Dear Students: If you see a kid eating alone in the cafe, say hello and join him/her,” including the hashtag #thatsnice.

But the heartfelt message inspired a lot more than just nervous students on their first day. Talk show host Katie Couric saw the message and retweeted it to her almost 900,000 followers. The tweet has since garnered over 2,700 retweets and more than 700 favourites.

Despite his new found Twitter fame, Boddy continues to spread his positive message on his Twitter account – retweeting young Twitter users thanking him for the encouraging words.

One user tweeted the officer on Wednesday saying, “I’m new to my school and someone saw that tweet and came [and] sat with me.”
