Woman assaulted by masked man in southwest Edmonton

EDMONTON – Police are coming out with another warning after a woman was assaulted by a masked man while walking alone in the Greenfield neighbourhood Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old was in the area of 114 Street and 36 Avenue, when she noticed a masked individual wearing dark clothing in front of her. She crossed the street, trying to avoid a confrontation; but as she got to the curb on the other side, the man ran towards her.

“She was knocked to the ground, she was choked, and she ended up screaming and yelling,” said Detective Brenda Dalziel of EPS’ Sexual Assault Section, which is investigating because the woman was touched in a sexual manner while she was on the ground.

The suspect then fled. He’s described as 5’5″ to 5’7″ tall with a slim build. He was wearing a hoodie, jeans, gloves, and a dark coloured mask.

This incident comes exactly one week after police issued a warning about an assault in the Garneau area. In that case, a woman was attacked from behind by a man whom she described as 6′ tall and wearing a bright blue ski mask.

“Right now we’re investigating obviously all possibilities that there could be some type of common evidence in both (cases), but like I say we’re investigating everything,” said Dalziel. “And at this point, they’re two different areas and there’s nothing further as to how they could be tied together.”

Police are asking anyone who may have seen a suspicious person in this area to contact them.

Residents, meanwhile, are just shocked to hear that an incident like this happened in their neighbourhood, which they and police both describe as calm and quiet.

Christy Harker regularly sends her children to school by themselves, and sees people taking walks late into the evening.

“I’m sure a lot of people are going to be surprised that that happened here,” she says. “You’re not safe anywhere. You never know what can happen.”
