TORONTO – If you have ever been sitting in a school lecture, daydreaming about the things you wish you were doing — playing Evil Dead on your Xbox, watching a Dawn/Shaun of the Dead marathon, learning about nutrition in a post-apocalyptic world…

Wait, back up. You can do that last one.

The University of California, Irving is launching a new online course that examines the themes brought up in the hit television show The Walking Dead.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The free, eight-week course, “Society, Science, Survival: Lessons from AMC’s The Walking Dead,” will answer important questions such as “what is the long-term effect of always sleeping with one eye open?,” “are squirrels really good for you?” and in a zombie-like situation “how can you best protect yourself?”

Much like the show itself, the massive open online course (MOOC) is about more than zombies.

It will centre on topics raised by the series, including how infectious diseases spread, the role of public health organizations and managing stress in disaster situations.

The course begins Oct. 14, the day after the fourth season premiere of The Walking Dead.

While the UC, Irving course is the first of its kind to be offered in a MOOC format, it’s not the first college course on zombies.

Columbia College Chicago has a course on zombies in popular media, and Michigan State University offers a course on surviving a zombie apocalypse.
