EDMONTON – A man from Edmonton, Alberta and another from Surrey, B.C. are recovering in hospital after falling into a crevasse on Mount Rainer in Washington State.
The two men were hiking in a group of three when they fell about 15 metres on Sunday morning.
They were traversing the Emmons Glacier Route when they fell.
They were found by another climbing group and pulled off the mountain by a helicopter.
The two men were taken to a Seattle area hospital and treated in the Intensive Care Unit.
On Wednesday, Mount Rainier National Park released the names of the climbers. They are John Spence, Oudina Chersi, and Andrei Pipas – who was the group leader, and from Edmonton.
Pipas has since been released from hospital.
Roughly 10,000 people try to reach Mount Rainer’s summit every year. Slightly more than half reach the top.
The Emmons Glacier Route is considered one of the most difficult for climbers.
