REGINA – This month’s Saskatchewan-wide traffic blitz took a close look at intersection safety while traffic enforcement stepped up their presence in Regina.

According to SGI, more than 40 per cent of collisions in the province take place at intersections. In 2012, 33 people died in intersection crashes.

Operation Crossroads handed out 452 tickets province-wide last week, in conjunction with a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) event in Regina.

STEP is a multi-agency group focused on strategies to improve traffic safety in select cities. Various organizations along with RCMP detachments team up to make Saskatchewan roads safer.

SGI car seat technicians participated with STEP to promote child passenger safety by checking booster seats during the check stops and gave away eight car seats.

Combined, these efforts also resulted in 237 intersection violations, 100 speeding tickets, 70 seatbelt violations, 37 cellphone infractions, and eight suspended driver charges.

Police were also looking out for pedestrian offenses, like jaywalking.

Saskatoon’s two-day STEP in April resulted in 857 tickets.
