Pair accused in spouse murder plot granted bail

MELFORT, Sask. – Two lovers charged with conspiring to kill their spouses in small town Saskatchewan have been granted bail.

Angela Nicholson, 49, of Melfort and Curtis Vey, 49 of Wakaw were released on strict conditions including not being able to contact each other or their spouses after hearings in Prince Albert earlier this week.

Nicholson’s lawyer Ron Piche says she was released on Wednesday.

“They agreed to her release on what I would consider fairly stringent terms, she’s on a curfew, she’s essentially confined to her residence except for employment purposes and a host of other kind of standard clauses, she was very relieved to get out,” he said.

Vey nor his lawyer were present.

Police allege the lovers had planned to kill Nicholson’s husband of 25 years, Jim Taylor, and make it look like a drug overdose, they also planned do away with Vey’s wife Bridget in a house fire.

It was Bridget that foiled the alleged murder plot recording a conversation between the pair.

Neither Jim nor Bridget were in court but on the phone Jim said he couldn’t believe they’d been released and that it scared him.

Mr Piche says Nicholson denies the allegations and plans to plead not guilty.

“I’m not going to get into her potential evidence at this time but she does say as a general statement that much of what has been said so far is not particularly accurate,” he said.

Vey’s lawyer couldn’t be contacted for comment.

The accused are due back in Melfort Provincial Court on Oct. 21.
