Police said the crash happened near Range Road 20. A traffic sheriff was passing by and saw the aftermath. Members of the RCMP, Capital West Traffic Services, Parkland County Fire and EMS were called to the scene.

“The officers at the scene observed a male in one of the vehicles trapped inside with severe, visible injuries,” the RCMP said in a news release issued Tuesday. “Efforts at providing first aid to the male were attempted but were hampered by fallen power lines near the vehicle.”

Because of that, utility provider Fortis Alberta was also called to the scene so its workers could cut power to the lines and allow emergency personnel to get the victim out of the vehicle.

Emergency crews tried to save the person’s life, but they died of their injuries at the scene. Police said the victim was a male but did not say how old he was.

A female passenger in the vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The RCMP did not say how old she is. Police did not say what the condition of the person or people in the other vehicle was.

While the RCMP said the cause of the collision has not yet been determined, it believes alcohol may have played a role.
