Possible plea bargain for drunk driver who killed 2

LAVAL – Accused drunk driver Anthony Alfieri appeared in court Tuesday.

He is facing charges for impaired driving causing the death of two of his passengers, dangerous driving causing death, hit and run and criminal negligence.

He was behind the wheel of a car that crashed into a light standard on De la Concorde boulevard in Laval back in February 2010.

But now, discussions are underway between the Crown and the Defence for a plea bargain, one that apparently favours the 29-year-old suspect.

If negotiations go his way, Alfieri could do just a few years behind bars.

According to Crown Prosecutor Pierre-Luc Rolland, the deal could see the most serious charge of impaired driving dropped.

MADD Canada, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, calls the move disappointing.

They worry if a plea bargain is struck it will send the wrong message to young people.

“Perhaps the message that might be perceived is that impaired driving is not a serious charge and it is,” said Theresa-Anne Kramer, a spokesperson for MADD.

“There are four deaths a day across Canada. This is a very serious crime. It can’t be taken lightly.”

Anthony Alfieri returns to the Laval courthouse in late September.

The families of the two victims and the suspect are all expected to be present.
