Edmonton election 2021: Who won in papastew?

Global News is projecting Michael Janz has won the seat in papastew, representing a new face on council in this central Edmonton ward.

With all polls reporting Tuesday morning, unofficial election results show Janz received 40.58 per cent of the vote.

Edmonton’s municipal wards will be redrawn and renamed effective election day Oct. 18. Formerly parts of wards 8 and 10, this ward is being renamed papastew. (Pronunciation: PAH-PAH-STAY-OH).

There are seven candidates running in papastew.

Here’s a quick look at the candidates running for council in papastew.

Haruun Ali

Ali is a university student who has been involved with a number of volunteer organizations and political parties.

He says he is running on progressive policies that will help create social, racial and economic justice for all.

His platform focuses on police reform, affordable housing and the environment. He also plans to advocate for a fare-free transit plan.

James Cameron

Cameron is an active volunteer who is involved with the Golder Bears Alumni Football Association, Friends of Strathcona Football Society and the Garneau Community League.

He has a background in construction and engineering and says he is skilled at planning, budgeting, making tough decisions and working collaboratively.

Cameron says he’s committed to building strong and diverse communities in Edmonton by budgeting responsibly, budgeting within our means and being accountable to residents.

Susan Field

As a businesswoman, Field says she is frustrated with “costs and endless bureaucracy stifling business growth.”

She is focused on kick-starting Edmonton’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery, as well as working toward a safer neighbourhood to improve the quality of life for everyone living in the area.

Kirsten Goa

Goa is a community organizer and consultant, as well as a mother of five who has sat on several boards, including serving as co-chair of the City of Edmonton’s Council Initiative on Public Engagement.

Her platform focuses on recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, safe and affordable housing, accessible safe communities and the implementation of the city plan.

Michael Janz

Janz has served as a trustee on the Edmonton Public School Board for the last 11 years.

His platform focuses on promoting the local economy, creating jobs, building a safe and inclusive city, as well as accelerating action on energy transition and climate change.

Tarcy Schindelka

Schindelka is a small business owner who says he’s running for council so the people of Edmonton have a council that uses money efficiently and effectively.

He is committed to administering tax dollars efficiently and has a focus on good transit, sidewalks, roads and alleyways.

Byron Vass

As a new father, Vass says he is running to ensure future generations can live and thrive in Edmonton.

He is focused on attracting bright, innovative business to the city, while ensuring homegrown talent stays in Edmonton. Vass wants to see a range of reliable transportation options, as well as a safe Edmonton for everyone.

In total, 11 people are running for mayor and 74 candidates are running for city council. Eight people are running to become Edmonton Catholic School Board trustees, six of whom have been acclaimed. There are 40 people are running to become Edmonton Public School Board trustees.

Advance voting will take place from Oct. 4 to Oct. 13, including Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 11).

Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
