OTTAWA – Ontario’s finance minister has written a letter to Ottawa’s mayor saying that the province will not support the creation of a second gaming zone in the city.

The letter comes as Ottawa city council faces a potential debate if the city approaches the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. with plans to establish two new gaming zones in the capital, which would allow construction of new casinos.

Finance Minister Charles Sousa says in a letter to Jim Watson that the Ontario government continues to support the OLG recommendation of developing only one zone and one site in the Ottawa area.

In response, Watson sent a letter to city council this morning ahead of today’s finance and economic development meeting, saying a motion the committee was to consider on a separate gaming zone for the Rideau Carleton Raceway is “largely superseded by the province’s decision.”

Watson says in light of the response from the province, a substitute motion will be tabled at today’s meeting consistent with the recent developments.

Watson says in the letter that council still has to make a decision about where best to locate a gaming facility.
