Body of fallen soldier returns to Canada

CFB TRENTON, Ont. – The body of the latest Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan returns to Canada Tuesday.

A military aircraft carrying a flag-draped coffin with the remains of Sapper Steven Marshall, 24, of Calgary, is expected to touch down at the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, Ont., at 2 p.m.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean and other Canadian dignitaries are expected to attend the repatriation ceremony.

Marshall was killed Oct. 30 by an improvised explosive device that detonated about 10 kilometres southwest of Kandahar City.

Marshall served with the Edmonton-based 11 Field Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, which is attached to the 1 Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry battle group.

In a statement, Marshall’s family has said was excited about military life and talked endlessly about what he was learning during training.

Marshall is the 133rd Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan.
