Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer says despite a weekend of loosened restrictions, it doesn’t mean everything can be open.
“We’re just steps into our Phase One (reopening) plan,” said Dr. Brent Roussin.
Roussin said he understands why local businesses, museums and galleries that are still not allowed to open would be frustrated, but added restrictions will only loosen faster if people get vaccinated.
“Additional announcements will be made in the coming days for those who have their first and second vaccine,” he said.
“Fully vaccinated people will be able to do more, safely.”
A girl under the age of 10 was one of the victims of COVID-19 over the weekend, with her death announced Sunday.
She is one of the few Manitobans under the age of 10 who has died from the virus.
“Typically, severe outcomes have been rare in younger children,” said Roussin, adding that while the girl had underlying conditions, no additional information about her would be released due to privacy reasons.
However, Roussin said he doesn’t expect a spike of severe cases among young children.
On Sunday, there were 97 new cases. Saturday saw 106 cases and three more deaths.
