TORONTO — British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has reportedly pulled out of Guillermo del Toro’s next movie, which is set to shoot in Toronto early next year.

Crimson Peak, described as a “ghost story and gothic romance” set at the turn of the century, stars Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim), Jessica Chastain (The Help) and Mia Wasikowska (Albert Nobbs).

The Hollywood Reporter said no reason was given for Cumberbatch’s exit from the project.

The 37-year-old Star Trek Into Darkness star appears in the next two chapters of The Hobbit trilogy and has several films at the Toronto International Film Festival, including the opening night presentation of The Fifth Estate.

Emma Stone (The Help) dropped out of Crimson Peak earlier this year.

Production is scheduled to take place at Pinewood Toronto Studios, where del Toro directed this summer’s sci-fi flick Pacific Rim.
