A popular Chinese restaurant in Scarborough remained closed Thursday following an outbreak of salmonella poisoning that has made nearly 40 people sick and may have led to the death of an elderly man.

Toronto Public Health officials said they are investigating to determine the cause of death for the man, who was a "probable case" of salmonella poisoning from Ruby Chinese Restaurant.

There have also been 18 lab-confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning and an additional 19 people are suspected to have also contracted it.

Three people had to be hospitalized.

All those sick had eaten at the restaurant between Sept. 12 and 20.

It’s unclear when the restaurant will reopen.

Salmonellosis is an infection caused by salmonella bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps and can develop 12 to 72 hour after eating contaminated food. Infants, the elderly and those with weak immune systems are most at risk.
