Canada election results: Mississauga–Streetsville

Global News is projecting Rechie Valdez has been elected as the Liberal MP for Mississauga—Streetsville.

This riding is situated on the west side of Mississauga, Ont., and its boundaries are Highway 407 to the west, Highway 401 and the Mississauga-Brampton border to the north, Mavis Road, Highway 401, the Credit River and Creditview Road to the east, and Eglinton Avenue West, Erin Mills Parkway and Britannia Road to the south.

Mississauga–Streetsville, which has been represented since 2004, saw its boundaries shift ahead of the 2015 election as a part of a riding redistribution process.

Liberal incumbent Gagan Sikand won this riding in 2019 for a second term, garnering 50.4 per cent of the vote. Sikand managed to defeat Conservative Ghada Melek by 10,144 votes, a margin of 17.3. The NDP and Green Party candidates came third and fourth in this riding.

Sikand announced on Aug. 15 that he would not be seeking re-election.

As of 2016, Mississauga–Streetsville had a population of 118,301, with 87,961 registered voters.

Immigrants make up close to 47 per cent of this riding’s population, with large communities from India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Urdu, Arabic and Spanish are the most popular non-official languages in the region, according to the 2016 census.

The Town of Streetsville is home to the Bread & Honey Festival, which has been running almost every year since its creation in 1973.
