Incumbent Jaime Battiste is projected to be re-elected in the riding of Sydney-Victoria.
This electoral riding of Sydney—Victoria includes central Cape Breton, with Cape Breton Regional Municipality being split between this riding and Cape Breton—Canso.
This riding has been a Liberal stronghold since the early 2000s, with former MP Mark Eyking holding the seat from 2000 to 2019.
Eyking has represented the Cape Breton riding for 19 years.
Liberal MP Jaime Battiste was able to keep the red wave going in Sydney—Victoria when he was elected by voters in 2019. Battiste captured 30.9 per cent, with Tory MP Eddie Orrell coming close with 27.7 of the vote. NDP candidate Jodi McDavid came in third, garnering 20.1 per cent.
Battiste’s win in 2019 led him to become the first Mi’Kmaw member of Parliament in Canada.
The rookie Liberal MP made headlines back in 2020 over his decision to wear a Mi’kmaw medallion instead of a tie during a speech in parliament.
