B.C. records 20 COVID-19 deaths over three days, along with 1,759 new cases

B.C. health officials on Monday reported that 20 people died of COVID-19 over the past three days, along with 1,759 new cases of the disease.

There were 596 cases from Friday to Saturday while 605 cases were reported from Saturday to Sunday, and 558 from Sunday to Monday.

Of the new cases, 325 were in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 1,201 were in the Fraser Health region, 50 were in Island Health, 131 were in Interior Health, and 52 were in Northern Health.

Last Monday, the province reported 2,174 new cases over a 72-hour span.

The 20 deaths bring the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 1,622. Of the people who died, one was over the age of 90, 15 were over the age of 70, two were in their 50s, and two were in their 40s.

The number of people in hospital with the disease dropped by 30 to 415. Of those patients, 150 are in intensive care.

The number of active cases dropped from Friday’s total of 6,757 to 6,140, a decline of nearly 10 per cent.

The province has recorded 136,100 total cases since the start of the pandemic.

More than two million British Columbians have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Monday.

Everyone aged 40 and over will be able to book a COVID-19 vaccine starting Tuesday.

The province has seen a decline in the seven-day rolling average of new cases, which stood at 684 on May 6 and was 1,079 on April 8.

The seven-day rolling average of B.C.’s positivity rates stood at 7.4 per cent as of May 9 after surging past 10 per cent last month.
