Former MP faces drunk driving and cocaine charges

Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer has been charged with drunk driving and possession of cocaine after being stopped by police near Caledon.

The Ontario Provincial Police stopped Jaffer, 37, on Sept. 11 in Palgrave, Ont. after observing a car speeding through the village, just north of Toronto.

Jaffer was subsequently charged and will be in court in Orangeville, Ont. on Oct. 19.

Jaffer was first elected in the riding of Edmonton Strathcona in 1997 and eventually became chairman of the national Conservative caucus before losing his seat to NDP challenger Linda Duncan in 2008.

He is married to Helena Guergis, an Ontario MP and the Secretary of State for the Status of Women.

Jaffer and Guergis make their home in Angus, Ont., which is about 80 kilometres north of Toronto, in the heart of Guergis’ riding.
