Ont. man, 61, charged in major drug seizure at U.S. border in Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. – Police say a 61-year-old eastern Ontario man is facing charges after large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine were seized at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor.

Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP say the drugs were found earlier this month in a search of a truck carrying produce from California.

CBSA officers say an examination of the tractor-trailer found inconsistencies in the front wall of the cargo trailer.

After removing a number of interior panels, investigators say they discovered multiple packages containing 53 kilograms of cocaine and 22 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Wayne Douglas Rutherford of Colborne, Ont., is charged with unlawfully importing a controlled substance, and possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Rutherford has been released from custody, and is to appear in court in Windsor on Sept. 9.

This is the second significant drug seizure at the Ambassador Bridge in the past four months.

On May 28, officers seized 22 kilograms of cocaine and charged Goudarz Daroughi Ziliae of Richmond Hill, Ont., with unlawfully importing a controlled substance, and possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking.
