Tropical Storm Erin forms off African coast

TORONTO – Tropical Storm Erin formed early Thursday morning off the coast of Africa, near the Cape Verde islands.

Erin quickly organized itself after being declared a tropical depression late Wednesday night.

The storm is moving west-northwest around 26 km/h and is expected to continue in that direction over the next couple of days with some decrease in forward speed.

Erin’s maximum sustained winds are 65 km/h with higher gusts.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, believes that Erin will strengthen until it reaches cooler waters where it is expected to weaken over the next few days.
