Cruise to Bomber game Friday

WINNIPEG — The most anticipated tailgate party in Winnipeg is ready to set sail.

The MS River Rouge cruise ship is ready to take Bomber fans to and from the games starting Friday, when the Bombers take on the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

“When we found out they were building a new stadium at the U of M, the first thing we thought was let’s do something for the football team, let’s do something for Winnipeg and offer innovate transport and just a fun addition to the evening,” said Lisa Hobday, with the River Rouge.

You can enjoy a burger or steak before the game and a drink or two.

There will be a DJ on board and Bomber games all the way there and all the way back.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Bomber fan Gary Roxbough. “The parking’s a bit of a challenge there. I think it’s getting better but if this gives people a new alternative, then do it.”

Roxbough and his wife, Bobbie, said they’ll definitely get on board.

“We used to go on this a long time ago. I think it’s bringing back an old tradition,” said Bobbie.

So far, 50 people are booked for Friday’s cruise, with room for as many as 400 fans.

Fans can park at the Alexander Docks on Waterfront Drive, take the two-hour cruise up the Red River and dock at the University of Manitoba for $25. The ship will board at 3:30 p.m. and leave at 4 p.m.

“You have an hour to get from our docks to the stadium,” said Hobday.

Investors Group Field is approximately a 15-minute walk from the docks near the University of Manitoba.

After the game, fans have an hour to get back on the ship and enjoy the two-hour cruise back to the Alexander Docks.

Fans in other cities said it sounds like a great experience.

“I think it sounds like a lot of fun,” said Brittany McDonald, an Eskimos fan. “I would do it.”

“I think it could be unique to Winnipeg,” said Corilea Benson, from Saskatchewan. “It would be a lot of fun.”
