Fire crews respond to second-alarm fire in southwest

CALGARY- Fire crews were called out to a second-alarm fire in the city’s southwest, which caused major damage to a condo complex.

The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. at a three-storey complex in the 300 block of Southampton Drive.

When fire crews arrived, smoke and flames were billowing out of the roof. Thick, black smoke could be seen from kilometers away.

They managed to get control of it about half an hour later. A number of residents were evacuated, before the building partially collapsed.

Fortunately, nobody was injured, but several firefighters had to be assessed by EMS due to extreme heat.

Those living in the building will not be allowed back on Wednesday night, due to the damage.

So far, there is no word yet what sparked the fire, or a damage estimate.
