Critical injuries after car hits building, closing most of Portage

WINNIPEG – A man is in critical condition and most of Portage Avenue was closed for most of the morning rush hour after a car crashed into a building at Garfield Street at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Police believe the driver was going north on Garfield Street and continued across Portage and into the building on the north side after the driver lost control.

The car hit the Addictions Foundation Manitoba building at 1031 Portage and the driver had to be removed by firefighters.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition. He had no passengers.

Police closed all westbound lanes and all but one eastbound lane of Portage Avenue between Sherburn and Dominion streets for much of the morning rush hour, causing major traffic delays.

Police completely reopened the road at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information to call 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
