Oliver RCMP say explosive device blew up parked car

Damage caused by the IED. BC RCMP

Oliver RCMP believe an improvised explosive device was placed under a parked car, destroying the vehicle and sending pieces of the vehicle flying.

Police say it appears the IED was placed under a parked vehicle behind a residence in the 600-block of Earl Crescent. The explosion occurred around 2:00 a.m. Sunday.

The force of the explosion caused pieces of metal, rubber and other material to travel through the walls of nearby structures.

Police were alerted to the explosion by a neighbour who found a piece of metal inside her garage. It appears the metal traveled through the outside wall into the garage.

“The damage appears to be consistent with an explosion of some significance going off under the vehicle” says Sgt. Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the BC RCMP. “It does not appear that any local residents were injured in the explosion.”

“Investigators are working in close partnership with the BC RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit who will be attending the scene” says Thiessen.

Police say the motive for the explosion is not yet clear and are asking anyone with information to call Oliver RCMP or Crimestoppers.
