Slender Highway 22X bridge over Macleod Trail set to grow

CALGARY – There’s good news for commuters in the city’s south who have long suffered through an inconvenient traffic snag on Highway 22X.

Right now, four lanes of traffic are forced to funnel down to two lanes as they travel on the bridge over Macleod Trail.

It’s already a hassle, and was set to become an even greater inconvenience in the fall, when 22X is expanded to six lanes.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On Friday, the province announce they would be moving to fix the issue, by expanding the narrow bridge.

Starting as early as Monday, work will begin to add an additional lane in each direction.

“We’re gonna start addressing the traffic problem of tie ups at the bridge,” says McIver.”We’re gonna be investing $4 million to take the bridge from two lanes to four – one lane in each direction, to two in each direction, to be perfectly clear.”

About 40,000 vehicles a day use the bridge in each direction.
