WINNIPEG — More than 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil in memory of Lisa Gibson and her two children, 2-year-old Anna and three-month-old Nicholas, at The Forks of the Red and Assiniboine rivers on Thursday.

The vigil was held the same day as a memorial for the three, who died last week in Winnipeg.

Gibson’s two children were found unresponsive in a bathtub at the family’s Westwood home on July 24. Gibson’s body was found in the Red River near The Forks on Saturday.

People who attended the Thursday evening vigil were asked to bring a white flower. The flowers were dropped into the Assiniboine River and floated upstream.

“We wanted to gather together and collectively sort of share our sorrow and grief and also talk a little bit about mental illness and why it shouldn’t be stigmatized and why there’s nothing to be ashamed of if you are struggling with a mental illness,” said Karla Penner, who helped organize the vigil.

Lisa Gibson sought treatment for postpartum depression before her death, an extended family member has told Global News. The obituaries for her and her children asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba.
