EDMONTON – The body of a 14-year-old who was reported missing after a canoe carrying him and another teenage boy capsized in Lesser Slave Lake was recovered Sunday.

He was reported missing after their boat capsized near Dog Island on July 31.

A multi agency search began, involving the Slave Lake Fire department, Slave Lake Search and Rescue, Alberta Fish and Wildlife, SRD, Parks Enforcement Officers, RCMP and volunteers with the family.  Local pilots and citizens also assisted in the search.

About one hour into the search, one of the teens was rescued by a passing vessel, but the rescuer wasn’t able to find the other teen.

Crews searched for five days, and divers from Northern Alberta Aquatic Rescue Society (NAARS) were brought in and began searching the last known area where the boy went missing.  A sonar boat was also used.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, sonar imaging technology located an object which resembled a person.  Divers entered the water and located the boy’s body shortly after, in about 16 feet of water.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

Foul play is not suspected and alcohol or drugs are not a factor.

The name of the boy will not be released at the request of the family.  The boys were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.
