CALGARY– A specially designed neonatal ambulance will hit city streets this summer.
Alberta Health Services says the new vehicle will give health providers the best possible mobile environment to care for their smallest and most vulnerable patients.
Calgary EMS transfer over 500 babies between hospitals, every year.

Now they’ll be able to make those transfers with a new ambulance that has been developed with input from both EMS and members of hospital’s NICU teams.
The new ambulance can transport two incubators at a time; normal ambulances can carry only one at a time.
In addition, a hydraulic lift at the rear of the ambulance can lifts heavy incubators smoothly and safely, and air suspension provides a smooth ride even on bumpy roads.
The ambulance cost about $250,000, including the cost of all supplies in the unit, as well as dispatch communications and medical equipment.
