TORONTO – Environment Canada has sent out a team to investigate reports of a tornado that was captured on video Monday afternoon in Ottawa.

WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE; MAY OFFEND SOME VIEWERS

Geoff Coulson, Warning Preparedness Meteorologist with Environment Canada said of the tornado: “It was a type of day where it was going to be very unsettled. It was a cold-low situation, meaning there was very cold temperatures in the mid-levels of the atmosphere, but the surface still warmed up in the low-20s in many locations.”

This meant that there was a good possibility that a brief, weak tornado could form. Though Environment Canada forecasted thunderstorms for the area on Monday, it didn’t issue a tornado watch or warning because the chance was that any tornado that formed would be weak and short-lived.

“It does look like it was a tornado,” Coulson said. “Most likely an EF0 event.”
