Smoking near Calgary playgrounds banned by Thursday

CALGARY – City council has passed a tougher anti-smoking bylaw that will prevent people from smoking in local playgrounds.

The new bylaw prevents people from lighting up in spray parks, spots fields and skate parks 24 hours a day, seven days a week – even if children aren’t present.

It goes into effect on Thursday, August 1st.

Anyone caught smoking in those kid-friendly areas will face a $100 fine.

Councilor Andre Chabot put through the original notice of motion last year, and says the proposed bylaw goes even farther than he had intended.
