UPDATE: City committee votes in favour of tougher anti-smoking bylaw

CALGARY – A city committee has voted in favour of a tougher anti-smoking bylaw that would ban lighting up in any park, playground, spray park, swimming pool or sports field – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Councilor Andre Chabot put through the original notice of motion, and says the proposed bylaw goes even farther than he had intended.

The proposal passed the committee stage on Wednesday, and will now go to city council for a vote.

If the new anti-smoking bylaw is approved by council, it would be one of the toughest in Canada.

Chabot says bylaw officers would provide enforcement but suspects few tickets would need to be handed out.

“When people know something is against the law they tend to be more inclined to be compliant,” says Chabot. “Not everybody, but most people.”
