SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is inviting motorists to participate in a child car seat clinic on Thursday in Saskatoon.

SGI officials say it is important for new parents and guardians to familiarize themselves with front- and rear-facing seats.

Saskatchewan Prevention Institute members will be at Lot 15 next to the Saskatoon Field House from 1 to 4 p.m. to inspect and instruct people on proper installation.

Campus Safety will have a booth set up to talk safety and refreshments will be provided for children.

“There’s no reason not to ensure your kids are riding safely,” says Harold Shiffman, officer with Campus Safety.

According to SGI, there were 132 children, 8-years-old or younger, injured and two killed while riding in a vehicle in 2011. Eleven of the injuries and one of the fatalities were due to the child not having any type of restraint device.

Any child passenger under 40 lbs must legally be in a child car seat in the province.

In Saskatchewan, the driver is responsible for passengers under 16-years-old and failing to properly secure them could result in a $175 fine and three points off their license.

People can visit a scheduled car seat clinic in their area or book an appointment with a car seat technician for free with SGI.
