Damage from Sunday storm in Kitchener not due to tornado

TORONTO – Environment Canada confirmed that a storm that tore through Kitchener Sunday morning did not produce a tornado.

The storm moved through the area around 10:40 a.m., toppling trees and moving storage sheds. A large rooftop air conditioner at a plaza was moved over 50 metres. Most of the damage was reported near Cherry and Strange Streets.

A survey team, which was sent to investigate the area, concluded that straight-line winds gusted up to 100 km/h.

Straight-line winds are produced when a squall line develops. Squall lines can produce severe thunderstorms and damaging winds.
