TORONTO — Only days after it was previewed at Comic-Con, production is about to begin in Montreal on the highly anticipated new series from Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore.

Helix, which is set to debut next year on U.S. cable channel Syfy, follows a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control investigating a possible disease outbreak at a research facility in the Arctic who are drawn into a battle to save mankind.

“They realize the deeper that they go, the research they’re involved in has the potential to either save humanity or destroy it,” explained Moore during a Comic-Con panel discussion to promote the series.

Billy Campbell (The Killing) leads a cast that includes Hiroyuki Sanada (Revenge), Kyra Zagorsky (Falling Skies) and Calgary-born, Montreal-raised Mark Ghanimé (Emily Owens M.D.).

The 13-episode first season of Helix is scheduled to be shot in Montreal until mid-December.

Moore’s Battlestar Galactica, which ran for four seasons starting in 2004, was filmed in Vancouver.

Syfy has a solid track record of making shows in Canada. Next month it starts work on a second season of Defiance in Toronto (the series is on Showcase in Canada) and a fourth season of Being Human in Montreal.

The network also broadcasts the Nova Scotia-produced series Haven, Toronto-shot Lost Girl and Warehouse 13 and made-in-Vancouver series Continuum. All four series air in Canada on Showcase.
