Police said the situation has been resolved and police presence in the area of Montgomery Street and College Hill has been reduced.

Around 7:40 a.m., police arrived at the scene on Gregg Court regarding a report of a person with a firearm.

Police were able to confirm a man in a two-unit residence did have a firearm, after which 60 additional resources were deployed, they said in a news release.

Police say crisis negotiators were able to talk to the 28-year-old man for several hours. He exited the house around 3:30 p.m. and was taken to custody without incident, police said.

The area was in lockdown for most of the day. Multiple Fredericton schools were placed in hold and secure mode, an order that has now been lifted.

“I appreciate the cooperation of Frederictonians today – particularly those living in and around the affected area, as well as students, staff and families of the affected schools. It was a very long day for everyone, and I am grateful for a successful resolve. We know only too well that situations like this could end very differently,” said police Chief Roger Brown.

In a safety sweep of the residence, officers found two long guns, a bulletproof vest and knives.

Police said an investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
