Toys R Us Canada is voluntarily stopping the sale of the toy Aqua Dots and removing any remaining stock from stores.
The recall comes after a similar toy made by the same Chinese manufacturer, but sold in Australia, was found to contain a chemical that converts into GHB, a powerful date rape drug, when swallowed.
In Australia, the toy is called Bindeez. Three children there have been hospitalized over the past ten days after swallowing beads from the toy.
When eaten, the compound can cause seizures, a coma and even death.
The beads in the toy are arranged into designs that fuse together when sprayed with water.
The toy is extremely popular and was named Australia’s Toy of the Year by the country’s toy industry earlier this year. It was expected to be a best seller this Christmas.
The Hong Kong government has launched an investigation into the toy supplier.
