Salsa dance class popular with new moms

Nothing gets your feet tapping and hips grooving, like Latin music.

That’s why a Salsa dance class for moms is taking Calgary by storm.

Salsa Babies is a Toronto-based company, with franchises now in Calgary and Edmonton.

The babies spend the whole class attached to mom. The women say the extra 15-20 pounds intensifies their workout.

Most of the babies happily bounce around in baby carriers, or nod off to sleep.

Calgary owner Michelle Collins says women love it, because it helps them get back into shape and feel sexy again.

“I want to show them they can do this and bring up their confidence…show them you’re still sexy…even more sexy now that you’re a mom,” says Collins, mother of two with a background in dance.

The class is open to all fitness levels and dance experience is not required.

The choreography is basic, but there is of hip action and even a few turns.

New mom Marnie Sullivan says it’s so much fun, and doesn’t find the class intimidating.

“Because it’s all moms, all in the same boat, it lets you let go of your inhibitions and shake your hips a little bit,” says Sullivan.

Salsa dance classes are appropriate for babies 8 weeks and up
