Decision Calgary: Ward 2 candidates

Ward 2 is in the is in the city’s far northwest and includes the communities of Arbour Lake, Citadel, Evanston, Hamptons, Hawkwood, Kincora, Nolan Hill, Ranchlands, Royal Oak, Sage Hill and Sherwood.

It has the second smallest population in the city but in recent years has accounted for over 12% of Calgary’s growth thanks to rapid expansion of Evanston, Kincora,  Sherwood and Sage Hill.

FAST FACT: Ward 2 has an 88% home ownership rate, the second-highest in the city next to Ward 12.

Current Councillor: Gord Lowe has represented Ward 2 since 2001, but is not running for re-election.

THE CANDIDATES 

BERNIE DOWHAN is a community learning advocate at Calgary Public Libraries. He has also worked as a math instructor at Bow Valley College and the Webber Academy. His priorities include improving traffic congestion, expanding transit service and holding the line on property tax increases.

JOE MAGLIOCCA finished a close second to Gord Lowe in the 2010 civic election. He says he hasn’t really stopped campaigning since the first time he ran in the ward in 2007. Magliocca believes in planning responsibly for the future and having a more accountable and transparent civic government. He attends numerous community events.

RICHARD POON is known for his fight to keep shark fin soup in Calgary. He has a bachelor degree in applied information technology and worked for more than 20 years in the electronics and I.T. industry.

SHAWN RIPLEY is a business entrepreneur in the fields of technology, tourism and real estate. He served three terms on the Calgary Planning Commission and has been active in the West Springs/Cougar Ridge Community Association. His campaign platform includes improving transportation systems and controlling city spending .

TERRY WONG has worked in municipal government administration for almost 30 years, mostly as a manager and program/project manager in infrastructure asset management. He is currently a manager at the City of Calgary. He has also worked for Calgary’s former General Hospital, the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and the Greater Vancouver Regional Hospital District.
